DCSD Attendance Policy

Student Work Policy for Absences

We know that life doesn't always happen during our breaks and there are family events and vacations that happen while school is in session. We want you to enjoy those times. Please know that the instruction that happens in the classroom cannot be made up with worksheets and packets. We do our best to bring your child up to speed when they miss school, but missing what happens in the classroom will affect student learning.

With that in mind, please know that we will do all that we can when your child returns to catch them up. If teachers can set aside something done on paper, they will do so to give to your child upon return. However, teachers cannot gather things for your child to take with you to do while you're away. This is not how instruction works and it puts a big burden on teachers to try and make that happen.

Please let us know, both at the front desk and with your teacher, when your child will miss school, however, know that teachers will not be providing work to take with you. They will do all they can to catch them up after the fact.

Truancy

A student is considered habitually truant if he or she has 4 absences or more in one month or 10 absences or more during the school year. For more information, please visit:

NOTICE OF DESTRUCTION OF SPECIAL EDUCATION RECORDS

Special Education records which have been collected by Douglas County School District related to the identification, evaluation, educational placement, or the provision of special education in the district, must be maintained under state and federal laws for the period of five (5) years after special education services have ended for the student. Special education services end when the student is no longer eligible for services, graduates, or completes his/her educational program at age 21, or moves from the district. This notification is to inform parents/guardians and former students of Douglas County School District's intent to destroy the special education records of students who exited special education services as of June 30, 2016. These records will be destroyed in accordance with state law unless the parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student notifies the school district otherwise. After five years, the records are no longer useful to the district, but may be useful to the parent/guardian or former student in applying for social security benefits, rehabilitation services, college entrance, etc. The parent/guardian or eligible (adult) student may request a copy of the records by requesting the records by email to [email protected].
